In a first, the two renewables dethroned "king coal" for the first five months of 2023.: For the first five months of 2023, solar and wind power generated more electricity in the US than coal did, setting a record for the renewable energy sources. Official data from the US Energy Information Administration indicates that wind and solar energy out-produced coal in January, February and March, CBS News reported, while preliminary figures show the same trend for April and May. All told, wind and solar generated a combined 252 terawatt-hours from January through May, compared with coal's output of 249 TWh.
