Last fall, Atreyal Ransom could only dream of taking a souped-up Subaru for a spin. Mr. Ransom, of Brooklyn, hoped to one day repair cars and cellphones as a career and maybe open a business, but first he needed help paying for college books. Now he gets behind the wheel and under the hood for a living. In the Bronx, Clementine Matthias, a single mother, had lost her biggest source of strength and support when her mother died in 2016.
