Investment Associate – Absolute Return

The University of Virginia Investment Management Company (UVIMCO) provides investment management services to the University of Virginia and affiliated entities and is responsible for monitoring and evaluating investment strategies for an approximately $14 billion investment portfolio. Our portfolio is invested globally across a broad range of asset classes and strategies including public equity, long/short equity, private equity, venture capital, real assets, absolute return, credit, fixed income, and derivatives. UVIMCO employs approximately 40 professionals in Charlottesville, Virginia and one managing director in Oakland, California. The investment team monitors and evaluates the full spectrum of global investment strategies and allocates capital to active external managers. The Investment Associate position, based in Charlottesville, is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic organization that utilizes world-class investment strategies to further the mission of one of the most prestigious public institutions of higher education in the country. 

Position Overview  

The Investment Associate – Absolute Return position is an opportunity to work directly with senior management in a flat and dynamic investment team. Responsibilities include:   
  • Report directly to the Managing Director of Absolute Return and Credit, focusing on the absolute return portion of the Long Term Pool, which includes a wide variety of benchmark-agnostic investment strategies;
  • Source, evaluate and monitor external investment managers across alternative strategies and asset classes;
  • Work as an integral member of the broader investment team to research emerging investment themes;
  • Prepare and present investment recommendations alongside senior staff;  
  • Train and mentor junior staff members;
  • Complete special projects as directed by senior management.   
Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will embody humility, intellectual honesty, a love of learning, a commitment to continuous improvement, and a passion for investment management. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a strong appreciation for the endowment model of investing, the active management process, and alternative investment strategies.  Affinity for the University of Virginia or the Charlottesville, VA area are preferred.
Required Skills:
  • A broad understanding of absolute return managers and strategies and 3 to 5 years of related professional work experience, preferably in manager selection;
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills, and an enthusiasm to collaborate and learn alongside an experienced investment team;
  • An ability and desire to establish effective working relationships with external managers and other constituents;
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to comprehend broader market trends;
  • Deep and broad quantitative skills are highly attractive, but not required;
  • Undergraduate degree and excellent academic credentials;  
  • CFA certification or working towards a CFA certification a plus.
