Michael has over 35 years of experience working in the public sector including the oversight of public pension systems as well as investments. He served 10 years as the director of the North Carolina Retirement System, the 10th largest U.S. public pension system, and also served as deputy director of the District of Columbia Retirement Board in Washington, D.C. A former University of Wisconsin-Madison administrator, Michael worked in Madison for 15 years prior to returning to North Carolina. During his time in Madison, he was assistant to the UW-Madison chancellor, policy advisor for the Office of the Governor and chief of staff in the Madison mayor's office. Michael holds a bachelor's degree and master's degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a member of the Board of Directors and past chairman for the National Institute on Retirement Security and is past-president of the National Association of State Retirement Administrators.
