"John Stephens is Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer responsible for directing financial planning, accounting, tax, auditing, investment management, financing and investor and shareowner relations for AT&T. He was appointed to his current position in June 2011.
Previously, Mr. Stephens served as Senior Vice President and Controller responsible for all financial reporting and operations, accounting policy, business planning, and regulatory reporting for AT&T. He was also responsible for all corporate tax and shared services activities matters. He was named to that position in November 2001.
Prior to serving as Controller, Mr. Stephens served as Vice President-Taxes, where he oversaw all corporate tax matters, a position he was appointed to in August 2000. He previously served as managing director-taxes, where he had similar corporate tax responsibilities. He was named to that position in 1995.
Mr. Stephens joined the company as director-federal taxes in St. Louis in 1992. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Stephens served as a tax senior manager with Ernst & Young in St. Louis. His career also includes serving as a member of the tax staff of Peat Marwick & Mitchell in Kansas City.
Mr. Stephens earned his B.S.B.A. degree in Accounting from Rockhurst College in Kansas City. He also holds a J.D. degree from St. Louis University's Law School. He has served on the board of directors of Telmex, a Mexico based provider of predominantly wireline communication services, and América Móvil, an international provider of telecommunications service. Additionally, he serves on the audit committee of the Board of Directors of a large privately held retailer. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Stephens serves on an advisory board to the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. Mr. Stephens has also served on the board of numerous educational and social service organizations.
Mr. Stephens and his wife, Michele, have been married 31 years and have six children. "
