Beset by lower gold prices, diminished output, and a heavy debt load, Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX) has decided to sell its half of the Kalgoorie gold mine in western Australia, a move that could set the stage for Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM) to swap places with its industry peer as the world's top gold producer.
