Under the supervision of the Chief Investment Officer and working closely with the Directors of Investments, the Investment Analyst supports the implementation of a $2.1 billion private foundation in a small team-driven decision process. This position requires an intellectually curious individual that is interested in working across all investment strategies. The Investment Analyst is responsible for leading the weekly investment team meeting and setting the agenda including key macroeconomic issues, asset allocation rebalancing, and portfolio monitoring discussion items. This role also assists with portfolio analysis, investment monitoring, review and analysis of the Foundation’s external investment managers and new investment opportunities, as well as performs related activities like daily performance and trade analysis. In addition, the Investment Analyst will maintain several databases used to support portfolio management efforts; keep abreast of current economic trends; assist in the preparation of investment presentation materials for review by the Board; and conduct special industry studies. The Analyst has significant independence to meet with investment managers individually.
This is a two – three year position mentored by the CIO and Investment Directors and is expected to collaborate with the investment team on ways to expand their own career development. There is also an opportunity to be involved with grantmaking Initiatives on the programmatic side of the organization.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the investment team in implementing the portfolio in a small and collaborative team environment
- Lead the weekly investment team meeting and set the agenda including key macroeconomic issues, asset allocation rebalancing, and portfolio monitoring discussion items.
- Analyze new investment opportunities across a broad range of investment strategies
- Analyze investment manager and investment strategy performance to ensure it is in line with the Foundation’s long-term objectives
- Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of current external investment managers
- Monitor investment managers for compliance with Foundation investment guidelines
- Stay abreast of current developments in the institutional investment marketplace
- Work with CIO to create a career development plan to ensure the two – three year experience is rewarding and advances the Analyst’ investment career
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree required (finance, economics or a related field), CFA or CFA candidate preferred
- One to three years of direct institutional investment work experience
- Demonstrated experience with public equity, private equity, and/or hedge fund investments
- Knowledge of institutional investment practices and procedures
- Experience interpreting quantitative and qualitative data and making informed recommendations
- Beginning to build personal network of industry contacts including peers and able to utilize other team member’s contacts as necessary to improve investment decision making process
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to generate both qualitative and quantitative independent analysis
- Display independent judgement and sound decision making skills on general activities and willingness to be mentored to develop the foundation of good investment judgment
- Ability to recognize when a decision or action is beyond the scope of responsibility for the role and exercise good judgment when to seek advice or help from other investment team members
- Strong work ethic, able to set goals, prioritize tasks, and manage simultaneous projects
- Plan and manage projects in their entirety and ensure they are delivered on time
- Have the ability to know the right questions to ask both internally and externally to seek desired information or understanding
- Ability to communicate results to the investment team and/or ask for clarification when necessary to meet objectives in a timely fashion
- Flexible and able to take initiative and work collaboratively with a small team
- Excellent computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and databases
- Strong research, due diligence, and presentation skills
