Several pensions and endowments announced shifts in leadership in January. Senior investment professionals moved to other institutions, and interim executives were named.

Here are the top institutional investment moves in January:

Asset Allocators:
Geetanjali Gupta, senior vice president at Harvard University’s endowment, was named as chief investment officer of the New York Public Library. Gupta will begin her new role on Feb. 26, 2018 and will manage the library endowment’s $1.2 billion in assets.

Rich Hall, head of private equity at Harvard Management Co., was named as the new deputy chief investment officer of University of Texas Investment Management Company (UTIMCO). Hall will reunite with Britt Harris, who was appointed as UTIMCO’s chief executive officer and chief investment officer. Previously, Hall and Harris worked together at the Teacher Retirement System of Texas before Hall left the pension to join the Ivy League endowment.

Kristina Alimard, chief operating officer at University of Virginia Investment Management Company, was appointed as interim chief executive officer of the $8.6 billion endowment. Sargent McGowan, managing director at the Virginia endowment, was appointed as interim chief investment officer. These two interim executives were named due to the departure of Lawrence Kochard, chief investment officer and chief executive officer. Kochard is currently the managing director and chief investment officer at Makena Capital Management.

Ellen Hung, assistant chief executive officer of Santa Barbara County Employees’ Retirement System, was named as the new deputy chief investment officer at the Illinois State Universities Retirement System. She will replace Douglas C. Wesley on Jan. 30, 2018, and will help oversee the $20 billion investment portfolio.

Richard Fanshawe, fund manager from Derbyshire Pension Fund, was appointed as head of private markets at Brunel Pension Partnership. Brunel Pension Partnership is an asset pool for ten public pension funds in England, and Fanshawe will join the institution on Feb. 1, 2018.

Jesper Norgaard, group chief investment officer at Nordea Life and Pensions, was appointed as deputy investment director at Sampension, a pension fund in Denmark. The deputy investment director is a newly created position at the $47.5 billion pension, and Norgaard will assume the role at the fund on Apr. 1, 2018.

Asset Managers:
Daniel McCollum, managing director at Brown University, announced his departure from the $3.5 billion endowment. He will be managing alternative investments and illiquid markets at the investment management firm Hirtle Callaghan & Co., as the new deputy head of investments.

Santander Asset Management recently named Tom Caddick, head of global multi asset solutions, to chief investment officer of its United Kingdom arm. Caddick replaces David Stewart, who was chief investment officer of Santander Asset Management UK.
