John C. Michaelson is the founder, Managing Partner and Portfolio Manager of Michaelson Capital Partners, LLC, an asset management firm and registered investment advisor based in New York City.
In 2006, Mr. Michaelson founded Michaelson Capital (and its predecessor firm, Imperium Partners Group) to manage diversified investment portfolios for families with the objective of preserving capital while earning a superior return. Michaelson Capital also manages hedge funds and separate accounts for institutions and high net worth individuals. These focus primarily on providing middle market growth companies with debt capital, strategic counsel and access to an extensive business network.
From 1994 to 2005, Mr. Michaelson served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Portfolio Manager of Needham Investment Management, LLC. Needham Investment Management is the asset management affiliate of Needham & Company, Inc., a full service investment bank serving growth companies. During his tenure as Chief Executive, assets under management grew from $46 million to $1.6 billion in equity hedge funds, special situation funds and listed mutual funds.
In 2004, Nelson’s ranked Needham’s flagship hedge fund, co-managed by Mr. Michaelson since 1994, as the 7th best performing equity fund across all investment styles over the prior ten years, compounding at 22.7% p.a. and the only fund in the top ten with no down years.
Mr. Michaelson has served in a number of public service and charitable positions. These include:
2008 to date: Trustee of The Royal Air Force Museum (England).
2004 to 2013: Trustee of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.
2005 to date: Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of The Cooper Union’s endowment.
The endowment’s compound annual return of 15.5% for the fiscal years June 2005 to June 2013 ranks it as the top performing endowment in the country for that period. The Cooper Union endowment was also the top performing endowment for the five fiscal years ending June 2012 (source - Institutional Investor Magazine).
2008 to 2012: Member of the Investment Committee of the Eton College endowment (England).
Mr. Michaelson has authored numerous published articles. These include recent articles on investing in Pension & Investing Magazine and on economics in The Wall Street Journal and The Oxford University Journal of World Economics. Mr. Michaelson has also been the subject of recent articles and interviews on investing including in The Wall Street Journal; The Times; Institutional Investor Magazine; NACUBO; Bloomberg; and Foundation and Endowment Money Management. Mr. Michaelson is the author of a textbook published by McGraw Hill, Restructuring for Growth and has contributed chapters to other books.
In 1974, Mr. Michaelson received a BA from Oxford University and in 1985 he received an MA.
In 1980, Mr. Michaelson received an MBA with Distinction from The Harvard School of Business.
