Mr. Ailman is the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of the $180 billion California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS), the second-largest pension fund in the nation. As CIO, Mr. Ailman leads an investment team of 120 professionals, which manage the 140 divisions: Private Equity, Global Equities, Corporate Governance, Fixed Income, Real Estate, Operations and Innovation / Risk. He joined CalSTRS in the fall of 2000. He has over 30 years of institutional investment management experience. He has been named as one of the top CIO's in the US and in the world by several publications.
He has won numerous industry awards. He was named CIO of the year in 2000, 2003, 2007, 2013, and in 2014. He serves on the board of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment, the Emory University Center on Alternative Investments, the MSCI Index Advisory Board, and is the Co-Chair of the Milken Institute Global Capital Markets Advisory Council.
He appears regularly on CNBC and Bloomberg TV and radio and several other financial news networks. Prior to joining CalSTRS, Mr. Ailman served as the CIO for the Washington State Investment Board, and was the first CIO for the County of Sacramento.
Mr. Ailman received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1980. He received his Certified Financial Planner certification from the University of Southern California in 1984. He is married with three daughters and is a committed Promise Keeper.
