"Alex is the chairman and founder of Armstrong, Fleming & Moore, Inc. In her role as a principal of the firm, she provides comprehensive financial planning services to single women and couples, primarily retirees or those close to retirement.Alex is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Certificant and has her FINRA Series 1, 7, 24, 27, 31, 53, 63 and 65 securities registrations as a Registered Representative with Commonwealth Financial Network®, as well as various state insurance licenses. She is a member of the AFM Investment Committee.
Alex has worked in the investment field for more than 40 years. In 1977, she was the first person to earn the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification in Washington, DC. Previously a senior vice president of a New York Stock Exchange firm, she founded her own financial planning firm and broker dealer in 1983.
Alex coauthored a book for widows with psychologist Mary R. Donahue in 1993, titled On Your Own: A Widow's Passage to Emotional and Financial Well-Being, which is currently in its fourth edition.
A native Washingtonian, Alex is active in the local community. A past president of the Boy Scouts of America, National Capital Area Council (the first and only female president), she continues to serve on that board, as well as on the national board of Reading Is Fundamental (past treasurer). She served on the Board of Visitors of Georgetown University School of Business Administration and also served as president of the National Association of Women Business Owners, Washington, DC.
In 2010 she was included in the Washingtonian Magazine's list of top financial planners in the Washington area.The Washingtonian selected the advisors based on survey results from hundreds of area financial professionals and the magazine's own research. The list includes those who received the most recommendations from their peers.In 2006, she was inducted into the Washington Business Hall of Fame and, in 1994, received the Alumni of the year award from Stone Ridge, her alma mater. Alex also received the Award of Excellence in Commerce from Boston College Alumni Association in 1985. She is past president and current member of the Women's Forum of Washington, DC, which is part of an international organization of preeminent women in their respective fields.
She served for seven years on the national board of the International Association for Financial Planning (the precursor to the Financial Planning Association), retiring as chairman in 1987 after becoming the first woman to hold that position. Alex also served as chairman of the Foundation for Financial Planning (2000) and continues to serve on that board. In 2004 she was the first woman to receive the P Kemp Fain, Jr. Award, which is one of the highest recognitions bestowed on financial professionals annually by the Financial Planning Association.The Financial Planning Association's award is based on criteria including service to community, education, government and professional activities, and the core values of the FPA: integrity, competence, relationships and stewardship.
Alex is listed in Who's Who in America and is frequently quoted in national publications. She has been a guest on several national television shows, including CBS This Morning, Good Morning America, and Wall $treet Week.
Alex is married to Jerry J. McCoy, an attorney who specializes in charitable planning. They live in Georgetown in Washington, DC."
