May was an eventful month in venture capital across different industries and geographies. Trusted Insight compiled a ranking of the 10 largest venture investments of the month. While Silicon Valley startups appear to dominate the list, we’ve also seen aggressive investments in China and India, as well as unusual categories such as media production and jewelry trading.

China-based startups lead the ranking in fund size by a wide margin. Investments in the two headline-grabbing Chinese companies, Alibaba Pictures and Weidai (meaning “micro-lending” in Chinese), alone account for more than one-third of the total funding amount of top 10 deals.

In the domestic market, technology startups continue to be a hotspot for venture capitalists. Iconiq Capital fueled $150M into education app Age of Learning, pushing the quiet startup giant’s valuation over the $1-billion mark. Hyperloop One, the company formed to realize Elon Musk’s ultra-high-speed transportation concept, raised its biggest round of funding of $80 million since inception from Sherpa Capital and other notable investors, including GE Capital and NextGen Venture Partners.
