Carlos Ghosn, former CEO and chairman of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, was arrested in Japan in late 2018 on allegations of financial malfeasance. His fall from power was the most extraordinary in the history of the auto industry. Ghosn spent over 100 days in a Japanese jail, and posted millions in bail. While he was awaiting trial, he staged a dramatic escape at the end of 2019 from Japan to Lebanon. He'd claimed he was innocent, but he was facing a nearly 100% conviction rate by Japanese prosecutors. Lebanon does not extradite its citizens to Japan.
