Private Equity Research Consultant
The goal of the Callan Private Equity Consulting (PEC) group is to help clients build and maintain successful private equity investment programs that meet their private equity return objectives. The Private Equity Research Consultant contributes to this effort by collaborating with clients to identify qualified private equity investment strategies; conducts thorough investment due diligence; documents the findings of the due diligence process, and helps monitor private equity investments. The Research Consultant also contributes to Callan’s overall research and client education activities.

Research and Education
The Private Equity Research Consultant reports to the Head of Alternatives Consulting.
This position may be based in any of Callan’s offices, including San Francisco (headquarters), Portland, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, and Summit, NJ.

The Private Equity Research Consultant contributes to this effort by collaborating with clients to identify qualified private equity investment strategies; conducts thorough investment due diligence; documents the findings of the due diligence process, and helps monitor private equity investments. The Research Consultant also contributes to Callan’s overall research and client education activities.
Responsibilities include:
Research and Education
- Work collaboratively with members of the PEC team and the Director of Private Equity Manager Research to follow Callan’s sourcing and due diligence process
- Take responsibility for the Analyst’s assigned portion of the PEC universe to enable the Callan PEC group to cover the full breadth of private equity opportunities globally; this includes participating in semi-annual PEC forward calendar meetings to discuss opportunities under consideration for clients over the next 12-18 months and leading the discussion for their area of research responsibility

- The coverage areas for this position are currently expected to be:
- Meet with prospective private equity managers and document these meetings on Callan’s PEC manager database, consistent with the Analyst’s share of the PEC group’s meeting target of 300-400 annually
- Write Factsheets (preliminary due diligence reports) consistent with the Analyst’s share of the PEC group’s Factsheet target of 75-100 annually
- Conduct detailed performance attribution analysis and peer comparisons
- Write comprehensive investment due diligence (IDD) reports and client recommendations, consistent with the Analyst’s share of the PEC group’s annual IDD report target of 30-50
- Note, fund underwritings are done collaboratively with another member of the PEC group
- Produce private markets related materials for Callan’s Published Research Group, including white papers, blog posts, etc.
- Assist the Callan Institute in developing and presenting education materials for annual conferences, regional workshops, the Callan Alternatives College, etc.
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative monitoring on funds in which Callan’s clients have invested
- Assist with producing quarterly and annual performance reports for Callan’s clients
- Collect manager data in a manner that contributes to Callan’s data collection and analysis efforts
- Help clients develop a strategic planning and implementation strategy for their PE portfolios
- Assist clients with strategic planning through customized cash flow models and capital budget projections
- Participate in meetings, calls, and web ex’s with clients, Callan consultants, and new business prospects as appropriate
- Assist clients with performing ad hoc tasks and requests, as needed, on a timely basis
- Contribute to new business efforts through responding to RFPs, developing marketing materials, meeting with prospects, etc.
- Participate in, and contribute to, weekly PEC Business meetings to discuss internal and external PEC related initiatives and tasks
- Participate in, and contribute to, weekly PEC Research meetings to review recent meetings and discuss ongoing sourcing and due diligence efforts, and identify issues of concern or needing further diligence. The Analyst may be asked to lead this meeting as part of a rotating schedule.
- Collaborate with team members and other Callan employees, contribute positively to Callan’s values and culture
- Participate in, and contribute to, weekly PEC Research meetings to review recent meetings and discuss ongoing sourcing and due diligence efforts, and identify issues of concern or needing
- Minimum of five years’ experience in the investment industry
- Minimum of three years’ private markets experience, including sourcing and evaluating private markets strategies and performing private markets performance attribution analysis
- Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain complex private equity concepts to those with a broad range of industry knowledge
- Comfortable delivering investment recommendations and education presentations to Callan clients
- CAIA, CFA, and/or MBA or equivalent preferred
