Haverford College invites applications to our available full time, exempt, benefit eligible Director of Investments. Working with the Chief Investment Officer, the Director of Investments (the “Director”) is an integral member of the Haverford Investment Office, which oversees the investment of the College’s endowment. The Director will participate in all aspects of endowment management, with a primary responsibility for identifying, evaluating and recommending external investment managers and ongoing monitoring of them. The College partners with external investment management firms across a broad range of asset classes, including domestic equity, international equity, marketable alternatives, private equity, venture capital, real estate and fixed income. The Director will work closely with the CIO and Investment Committee to implement the investment strategy.

In addition to the financial, analytical, and qualitative skills to identify, evaluate and recommend external investment managers and subsequent ongoing monitoring of them, the position requires excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills to interact effectively with the campus community, other College departments, external advisors, and the College’s Investment Committee members. The Director will also have the opportunity to supervise and mentor an investment analyst and student interns. This position is located in Haverford on the college campus, with the opportunity for a hybrid work arrangement in accordance with College policy.

Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities:
 
  • Leads the due diligence process with respect to prospective investment opportunities for possible inclusion in the endowment. This process includes identifying, evaluating and preparing written recommendations for new investment managers considering both qualitative and quantitative criteria across asset classes, and presenting recommendations to the Investment Committee. Builds and maintains relationships with existing and prospective managers.
  • Monitors performance, portfolio management, and organizational issues of existing investment managers, which may include developing recommendations to terminate a manager. Meets managers either in person, at annual investor meetings, or by conference call/videoconference at least annually and as needed. Professionally represents the College and Investment Office in these forums, as a senior member of the Haverford team. Prepares written summaries of these meetings using the office’s research management software system.
  • Establishes strong relationships, including with the CIO and Investment Office personnel, Investment Committee, other College departments, students, alumni, and other College constituents; and with external consultants and other providers.
  • Engages in discussion with Investment Committee members during meetings and on an ad-hoc basis regarding specific areas of research or investment managers.
  • Contributes to the reporting function of the Investment Office, including preparation of materials for Investment Committee meetings and ongoing oversight of the endowment, including performance reports, risk analysis, investment updates and additional documentation.
  • Collaborates with CIO on ensuring compliance with policy guidelines and contributes to the development of investment policies and procedures; participates in endowment rebalancing analysis, discussion, and implementation.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Participates in investment oversight related to the College’s planned giving program and serves on the 403(b) Retirement Plan Investment Committee.
  • Supports the operational and administrative work of the Investment Office, working with the College’s Controller’s Office, external administrator and consultants.
  • Engages in discussion regarding endowment with various College constituencies, including students, staff, faculty, and alumni.
  • Supports special projects related to the endowment or general finances of the College, acts as a resource to other areas of the College, and assumes other responsibilities as assigned.
Line of Report:  The Director of Investments reports to the Chief Investment Officer, and will also have the opportunity to supervise and mentor an investment analyst and student interns.

Education, Training, & Experience:
  • Minimum of fifteen years of investment experience preferred, preferably in the evaluation of investment strategies and investment managers, both traditional and alternative.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or certification (e.g., MBA, CFA, CAIA) preferred.
  • Experience in an institutional setting, such as an endowment, foundation, family office, consultant or similar institution is preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial and investment theory and an understanding of the current investment environment; demonstrated investment judgment and curiosity; significant experience in investments/financial markets required, particularly with investment manager due diligence across qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Working knowledge of portfolio construction and risk management for a multi-asset class portfolio, including with illiquid asset classes such as private equity, venture capital, and real estate.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and quantitative skills required. Ability to synthesize complex information to make a concise and clear presentation (verbal and written). Experience recommending actions to sophisticated audiences, such as an investment committee
  • Ability to interact and gain credibility with College senior staff, the Investment Committee, and external investment managers.
  • Excellent time management skills; a willingness to share knowledge and a desire to continue expanding investment knowledge. Communicates and works effectively as a team member, while also being able to work on projects independently.
  • Must represent the College in a professional manner and have enthusiasm for liberal arts education and the mission of Haverford College. Exhibits maturity, reliability, composure, and unquestioned professional ethics to handle on-the-job challenges and to ensure the professional integrity of the College.
  • Works successfully as part of the Investment Office to uphold the College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite; experience with and aptitude to learn other analytical and research software and databases.
  • Ability to travel as necessary.
