Description:
The Senior Director will help lead Kaiser Permanente’s Alternatives portfolios to advance its mission of high-quality, affordable Healthcare. Kaiser Permanente’s Alternatives Program includes primary fund, secondary, and co/direct investments in Private Equity (Buyout, Growth, Venture), Private Credit, Real Assets (Real Estate, Natural Resources, Infrastructure), Absolute Return, and Impact Investing. Kaiser Permanente has two main capital pools: (1) Kaiser Permanente Retirement Plans and (2) Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, which combined total approximately $150 billion.
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum of twelve (12) years of progressive, relevant experience
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related field
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in finance, economics, business, or a related field
- Professional certifications (e.g., CFA, CAIA, ILPA Level II)
- Experience (ideally at least 15 years) managing institutional portfolios, preferably on behalf of limited partners with a large Alternatives allocation
- History in multiple Alternative asset classes, such as Buyout, Private Credit, Real Assets, and Venture
- Exceptional quantitative and qualitative skills to evaluate asset class, fund, and individual company investment decisions
- Superior risk management capabilities, including experience with Aladdin
- Experience serving on Limited Partner Advisory Committees
- Strong written, oral, and PowerPoint presentation skills, including experience in presenting to investment committees/boards and designing both template and bespoke reports
- Extensive understanding of investment performance and calculation processes
- A deep and broad professional network
- Unwavering honesty and integrity
Principal Responsibilities:
- Serve as a senior investment professional covering all Alternative asset classes
- Source new investment opportunities (primary funds, secondaries, co-investments, direct investments) through research and leveraging professional networks
- Conduct investment diligence using both quantitative and qualitative analysis of specific investment opportunities and their portfolio fit
- Review, interpret, and incorporate operational due diligence assessments from third-party vendors to advance manager analysis
- Present investment opportunities to Investment Committees
- Lead legal due diligence and counsel review of individual investments
- Manage existing portfolios, including monitoring manager performance, fostering partnerships, serving on advisory committees, and adapting risk tools to Alternatives
- Represent Kaiser Permanente in the investment community in accord with the highest professional standards
- Support the Executive Director – Head of Alternative Investments (ED) with asset allocation within the Alternatives asset classes and portfolio evaluation of each asset class
- Assist the ED with designing template and bespoke reports to facilitate investment decisions by the Vice President – Head of Pensions and Investments (VP) and Investment Committees
- Mentor less-senior team members
- Keep current on knowledge of capital markets with an eye toward non-Traditional investments
- Assist the ED with special research projects
