Summary

Located in the Washington, DC, metro area, HHMI is seeking an Investment Operations Analyst within our Investment Fund Services team to join HHMI’s investment office, which manages an endowment with net assets of approximately $22 billion. HHMI’s endowment comprises a diverse portfolio, including investments in domestic and international hedge funds, private equity funds, venture capital funds, real assets and direct co-investments, as well as publicly-traded domestic and foreign stocks, government securities, and other strategies spanning multiple asset classes.

As an Investment Operations Analyst within our Fund Services team, you will support the management of the Institute’s endowment.  Responsibilities include supporting investment operations in six broad areas: (1) management reporting; (2) performance and analytics; (3) transaction and cash processing; (4) account management and reconciliation; (5) accounting and valuation; and (6) business process and technology enhancements.  This role will be expected to contribute in all six broad areas and will gain exposure to all major asset classes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Investment Operations Analyst will support investment operations as follows:

  • Prepare, review, and publish timely and accurate internal and external reports

  • Coordinate and oversee the accurate closing of the endowment’s monthly accounting and performance records at its administrator, including reconciliations 

  • Assist with the design and implementation of business process improvements, technology enhancements, data initiatives, and reporting improvements

  • Coordinate directly with service providers to ensure the integrity and accuracy of entries made into the custody, accounting, performance measurement and fund transparency systems

  • Record transactions, valuation and performance information in accounting and performance systems, ensuring proper audit evidence is retained

  • Prepare and provide direction to the custodian for cash movements such as capital calls, distributions, subscriptions, redemptions, fees and transfers, and for internally managed equity, fixed income and foreign currency trades, ensuring timely and accurate settlement

  • Monitor ISDA and other OTC collateral management arrangements to mitigate risk

  • Cooperate with and assist in the conduct of internal/external audits

  • Communicate and coordinate the opening, closing, and maintenance of investment accounts

  • Maintain current and historical documentation related to the portfolio and benchmarks

  • Record investment terms and conditions as applicable

  • Review audit, SOC, and other reports of key business partners

  • Other duties as assigned

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Business, Accounting or Finance

Experience

  • At least 3-7 years of relevant industry experience and increasing responsibilities in investment management, accounting, performance and/or treasury operations for endowments, custodians, administrators and/or investment management firms

  • Knowledge of private and public investments (such as limited partnerships, hedge funds, private equity, stocks, bonds, derivatives, etc.) and financial reporting

  • Proficient and proven experience in MS Office applications, specifically Microsoft Excel for data reconciliation, analytics, aggregation, and presentation is required; Microsoft Access experience for data extraction and reporting is a plus

  • Experience with CRM software (e.g., Dynamo, Backstop), Bloomberg (Core Terminal and AIM Trading Platform), portfolio analytics applications (e.g., Caissa, Solovis), Eagle Investment Systems Star/Pace, BNY Mellon Nexen or similar custodian platforms and/or Burgiss Private Informant/Private I is a plus

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace.
